OutFront Minnesota criticizes the Minnesota Family Council and
Minnesota Citizens in Defense of Marriage for trying
to scare people into believing that we have a “covert and incremental
approach” toward pushing for marriage for GLBT people. The council is
trying to gather opposition to the municipal
health benefits bill a fair-minded common sense bill that
would allow local governments to choose which benefits to offer their
employees, including domestic partner benefits. Currently local
governments cannot do this due to a 1995 court ruling which prevented
it.
Our position has been clear – there is no critical mass for marriage
in Minnesota at this time. However, polls have also shown that
Minnesotans oppose discrimination against GLBT people. The municipal
health benefits bill would allow local governments to choose which
benefits to offer their employees. That’s simple fairness.
Currently, local governments are forced to discriminate against GLBT
families and cannot offer benefits to same-sex partners even if they
want to. That’s not the Minnesota way.
OutFront Minnesota wants to improve the lives of GLBT people every
day, in whatever ways we can. This is one of the ways we are doing that.
We think the Minnesota Family Council and Minnesota Citizens in
Defense of Marriage could better spend their time
trying to improve the lives of Minnesotans rather than waste time trying
to scare people as a means of avoiding basic fairness. |
