A new
poll released March 4th shows a full 52% of Minnesotans support
local governments being allowed to grant domestic partner benefits to
their employees.
When asked “Do you think Minnesota should or should not allow public
agencies to grant health benefits to the domestic partners of their
employees?” – more than half said YES. This confirms that Minnesota is a
fair-minded state with fair-minded people.
Less than a year ago, a poll commissioned by Equality Minnesota
showed that “Almost 70% believe “gays and lesbians should have the same
rights and responsibilities as everyone else.” And just short of 80%
thought “government shouldn’t treat people differently because of their
sexual orientation.”
“We are pleased with the results of the latest poll,” says OutFront
Minnesota Executive Director Ann M. DeGroot. “We know that when people
are presented with common sense ideas that benefit our community, they
will be in favor of it. The work at the legislature is vital – and
citizen support makes a big difference in this effort.”
As of March 5th, 29 sponsors in the house and senate have signed onto
a bill that would allow (but not require) local governments to offer
domestic partner benefits to their employees.
