More than 160 people came to the Bible Self Defense courses,
sponsored by OutFront Minnesota,
Faith
Family Fairness Alliance, and
Soulforce Q.
Participants learned about dissecting and gaining a larger understanding
of Biblical text which has often been used to justify anti-gay bigotry
and hatred, as well as learned about principles of nonviolent
communication. The large turnout as well as the positive response from
participants reflects a desire among religious progressives to counter
anti-gay bias.
These courses are part of a larger effort to continue to organize
people of faith around issues of GLBT equality.
Participants braved the cold and snow
to learn how to better defend GLBT rights when discussing Bible verses
with conservatives.
Testimonials from the classes:
"Very knowledgeable, entertaining, thought provoking."
"I can persevere using a nonviolent approach."
"Nonviolent social change is working toward 'being in a community
with those from whom we are currently divided.'"
"All were excellent, composed, interesting speakers."
"Wonderful."

Co-facilitators Laurie Crelly, Chair
of the Faith Family Fairness Alliance, Haven Herrin, Co-Director of
Soulforce Q, and Monica Meyer, Public Policy Director of OutFront
Minnesota address the participants.
There's lots people can do to take
positive action.
Two participants role play a
discussion about how the Bible can be interpreted to either justify
anti-gay bias or to uphold everyone’s humanity.
