Myths and deliberate misinformation are the trademark of the
so-called "ex-gay" movement. Despite overwhelming rejection of
"reparative" therapies by every legitimate professional health care
association (as well as mainstream Christian & Jewish congregations),
some local organizations seeks to "transform" GLBT Minnesotans to make
them heterosexual.
Whether motivated by genuine compassion that is merely misinformed or
cynical political opportunism, their attempts to manipulate a person's
sexual orientation are equally hurtful. The best way to help members of
our community from becoming victims of "ex-gay" organizations is by
educating ourselves about their agenda and damaging message.

The Southern Poverty Law Center's Spring 2005 edition of
Intelligence Report features the cover story, "Holy War: The
religious right's anti-gay crusade heats up." As described by the SPLC,
the issue reveals that "Religious leaders have engaged in 30 years of
name-calling and bogus 'science' in their attack on gays. But only now
is their crusade reaching biblical proportions." The article includes an
examination of anti-gay groups, a timeline of anti-gay efforts in
America, an examination of "cures" and the attempts to prove that
homosexuals were not targeted during the holocaust. |
