When Bruce and Kathy Ause’s daughter Angie came out to them almost 20 years ago, they didn’t know any other parents who had gay children. They learned about PFLAG (Parents, Family & Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and became active in the Red Wing chapter, which at the time included only three or four other families.

Over the years, the group has hosted many events to help educate the community about LGBT people and issues. As awareness has grown, Bruce and other PFLAG members have experienced more acceptance of their families. This past summer, they anticipated that 100 people would participate in the River City Days Parade and were surprised – and thrilled – when 250 supporters showed up.

Bruce and Kathy became involved with OutFront Minnesota more than 10 years ago. They’ve taken part in Lobby Day and have met with their legislators to advocate for LGBT equality. “Bruce and Kathy are great role models for how to be strong, supportive parents,” said Monica Meyer, OutFront’s Executive Director. “We greatly appreciate their involvement.”

“We contribute to OutFront because we believe in the work they do,” stated Bruce. “We’re looking forward to the day when Angie and her partner Cassidy have the same benefits and rights as other Minnesotans.”
