Position: Communications Internship

Reports To: Development Director and Communications Coordinator

Hours: 10+ hours/week

Salary: Unpaid

OutFront Minnesota is the premier organization advocating for and serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Minnesotans. OutFront Minnesota's mission is to create a state where LGBTQ people are free to be who they are, love who they love, and live without fear of violence, harassment, or discrimination. We are leading Minnesota toward LGBTQ equity through a combination of public policy, legal and individual advocacy, and education.

Summary

We are seeking a smart and ambitious natural communicator who is full of creative ideas and eager to contribute to advancing LGBTQ equity in Minnesota. The intern will gain visibility into the inner workings of a non-profit organization, gain experience and learn concrete communications skills, and produce results that make a real difference for LGBTQ equity. This person will create and curate engaging content to educate and mobilize OutFront’s supporters, activists, and donors.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Fully support OutFront’s communications strategy and execute it in different phases to reach targets and goals

  • Suggest innovative ideas for engaging content

  • Create and curate engaging content

  • Provide strategic input and feedback on communications initiatives

 

Social media

  • Assist in the management of content across social media platforms and websites

  • Engage with and respond to OutFront supporters on social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube

  • Assist with social media analytics

 

Graphic design

  • Support OutFront team with graphic design for various projects and events

  • Design invitations

  • Design graphics for social media and mass email

 

Press

  • Build and update media lists and databases

  • Write and distribute media announcements and press releases

  • Make media calls

 

Other

  • Assist with administrative duties

  • Staff events

  • Other tasks assigned as needed

Qualifications

  • Motivated to work for LGBTQ equity

  • Commitment and ability to work well within the LGBTQ and allied communities

  • Passion and a true interest in communications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Applicable knowledge of copywriting and editing

  • Strong understanding and experience with social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube etc.)

  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills

  • Attention to details

  • Strong desire to learn along with professional drive

  • Efficiency at MS Office

  • Able to meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality when working with donor information

  • Willing to take ownership of projects and work independently

 

Preferred

  • Demonstrated graphic design skills

  • Demonstrated video editing skills
