spotlight Marriage Organizer Sina Black

OutFront Minnesota is leading the community organizing effort for Minnesotans United to pass legislation this session for the freedom to marry. Associate Director of Organizing Sina Black, who joined OutFront’s staff last month, is responsible for the southern part of the state. She and her team of organizers are working in priority districts to raise awareness and create the political will needed to pass the marriage bill.

Sina stumbled into organizing about 10 years ago when she volunteered in her community to do voter engagement work. She has been organizing ever since! She’s advocated at a county and state level on issues related to poverty and has also worked at TakeAction Minnesota on the reNEW Minnesota campaign, a statewide electoral movement committed to building a grassroots base of motivated and trained leaders.

Last year, Sina was the Regional Organizing Director for the East Metro area on the “Vote No” electoral campaign to defeat the proposed constitutional marriage amendment. In this second phase of Minnesota United, the legislative campaign, she is building on established relationships and working with supporters and organizers to develop their leadership skills.

Being part of the LGBT movement for equality is important to Sina. She knows that even if marriage legislation is passed at the Capitol this session, there will be more to do. “The work we are doing today is just one step,” explains Sina. “If we win marriage this year, it will be a milestone. But our community is impacted by other issues, like economic justice, and we need to address those too.”

Originally from Mississippi, Sina moved to Minnesota about 20 years ago. She is the mother of a 15- year-old son and in her free time, she likes to hang out with her family and friends and watch “chick flicks.” If you’d like to volunteer for Minnesotans United in Southern Minnesota or any other part of the state, you can sign up here.
