spotlight Board Member Laura McCarty

In June, OutFront board member Laura McCarty and her partner Amanda Tufano will stand up in front of all their family and friends to declare their love and commitment to each other. “I’ve always wanted a big wedding ceremony,” explains Laura “so that the people I know and love can be there and celebrate with us!” She hopes that they will also be celebrating the legalization of marriage for same-sex couples in Minnesota.

OutFront is working with Minnesotans United and Project 515 to pass legislation for the freedom to marry. “It will be so exciting if the bill passes this session, but I also know that our work won’t be done,” said Laura. “There will be so much more to do – to continue to make it easier to come out at work, to make our communities more accepting and welcoming. Things won’t just change overnight.”

As an advocate for LGBT equality, Laura has been involved with OutFront for more than 10 years. When she moved to Minnesota, she volunteered at Twin Cities Pride. A few years later she joined OutFront’s staff as the Director of Development. For the past two years, she has served as a member of the board.

“I think OutFront Minnesota is one of the best statewide LGBT organizations in the country,” Laura states proudly. “I truly believe in the grassroots organizing and one-on-one education work we do. These things make Minnesota a place where LGBT people are safe and feel free to live their lives.”
