As organizations committed to serving and supporting our state’s diverse LGBTQ+ communities, we believe that everyone should be able to access the healthcare they need.

We stand together today to strongly condemn efforts to restrict essential healthcare for trans people and the appalling choice to seek to criminalize caring families and the providers who serve them.

Politically motivated attacks on essential healthcare for transgender youth and their families do not arrive in a vacuum.

Over this year we have seen a whole government effort to undermine basic rights, essential protections, and hard-won investments that support LGBTQ+ Americans. These have deeply  touched each of our organizations and the communities we serve. And they come at a time when public health infrastructure faces unprecedented challenges, where our communities are concerned about broad disinvestment in HIV/AIDS prevention and services, where reproductive freedom remains under attack, and where essential scientific and medical resources are being reshaped by political agendas.

That is wrong.

These are decisions that should be left up to trans folks, their families, and the trusted care providers they work with—not politicians in Washington.

And the facts are clear:

Best practice care for transgender youth and young adults is supported by every major medical association.

More importantly, this care is validated by the lived experiences of the thousands of trans and gender-expansive Minnesotans who are beloved members of our communities.

Unfortunately, at a time when Americans are worried about dramatic increases to health insurance premiums in the new year, Congress and this administration are instead once again using their platform to come after vulnerable communities.

To our transgender youth and their families who are afraid, know that here in Minnesota you are seen, you are loved, and you are not alone in this moment.

To all of our LGBTQ+ community members feeling the many impacts of this rhetoric and the weight of this year, know that we’ve got you, we’ve got us, and we are not backing down.

Our organizations are working together with providers, and fellow leaders across the state to use our voices and ensure that Minnesota continues to protect essential care for trans folks, for all of us.

Forward, together.
