Saint Paul, MN—Minnesota Attorney General, Keith Ellison, filed a lawsuit against the current administration over the federal government’s attempt to reinterpret Title IX in a way that would exclude transgender student athletes; this is an important action to protect the rights of Minnesotans.; this is an important action to protect the rights of Minnesotans.

We all deserve equality and protection under the law.

For more than half a century, Title IX has played a crucial role in expanding equal opportunities for girls and women; and it has protected all students from harassment and discrimination. That’s a legacy worth celebrating.

As we navigate through a time of unprecedented challenges to the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans, we are reminded that equality is not at odds with Title IX—in fact, it is at the heart of the law’s promise.

Here in Minnesota, LGBTQ+ students have enjoyed comprehensive non-discrimination protections since 1993; and trans-inclusive policies for athletics have been in place for more than a decade. The end result: Minnesota is a consistent leader in sports participation for girls and women, and our student athletes are thriving. Not in spite of our commitment to inclusion, but because of it.

By standing up for trans athletes, we are standing up for all athletes, ensuring that teamwork, fairness, and belonging remain at the heart of the game—and that every player is treated with dignity and respect, rather than being subjected to harmful scrutiny or exclusion.

We believe in a Title IX that protects and includes all of us.

Because everyone should have the opportunity to play and compete in the sports they love.
