Volunteer Emma – Anti-Violence Program Advocate

When Emma graduated from high school last spring, she decided to take a gap year before heading to college. In August, she moved from Wichita to the Twin Cities and went through OutFront’s Anti-Violence Program Advocate training and has been volunteering 8-12 hours each week.

As an advocate, Emma responds to phone calls that come into our crisis line, 1-800-800-3050 (Option 3) and offers support to LGBTQA individuals. “Some times, people call because they are just coming out and want someone to talk with,” explains Emma. “They might be looking for some kind of support group or other resources.” She has been trained to listen, connect people with information and resources. “I’ve had such an incredible year. Working at OutFront has been an amazing experience. The staff is so warm and welcoming.”

Last fall, Emma also interned with Minnesotan United. She began by phone banking and was given the chance to develop coaching and training skills. Prior to the election, she ran one of the action centers. In the next few months, she plans to return to Kansas and will begin taking classes at Wichita State University in September.

"We are so lucky Emma chose to spend her gap year with us up here in Minnesota!’ exclaims Anti-Violence Program Coordinator cheré bergeron. “She is a rock star victim/survivor-centered advocate. She approaches each person with calmness, curiosity, and a sense of solidarity. We couldn't be more grateful for her presence, her hard work, and her dedication to supporting survivors of violence!”

The Anti-Violence Program’s next Advocate Training will be in September. For more information, email cheré bergeron.
